Soubes is a beautiful Hérault hill village with shady places and fountains. It is a short, pleasant walk from Larkfield. A drink (and/or snack) at the bar in the picturesque centre of Soubes will be pleasant before the walk back. In summer there are tables under the trees in the square.

If you still feel a little more energetic we recommended a gentle walk to see the "Capitelles". See Soubes and the links. This route is signposted halfway between Larkfield and the Bar. There are many other walks offering varying degrees of exercise.

The picturesque village is steeped in history and mediaeval charm, with its 16th century chateau, 18th century church tower, old roads and peaceful alleys.

It  has a friendly local bar which also does snacks and a grocery store in case you run out of essentials.

The Bar

Many of the small villages and towns have local fetes during the summer months. The most popular event in Soubes is the bull running followed by paella and dancing in the evening. This takes place in August.

The area around Soubes has many Capitelles (called Borries in Provence). These are primitive stone built dwellings. Some are visible from Larkfield in fact two of our neighbours have them in their gardens.

The route of the Capitelles of Soubes is 1,450 metres long. It is a work of charity by SPES. An information sign on the architecture of the Capitelles shows the visitor the basics of the old architecture. Among the ancient terraces cultivated in the past, you can perceive the history of the people and the land around Soubès. This walk is suitable for children.

The gentle route de Capitelles is linked with the more difficult (long, steep and rough) walk ‘Botanique de Font d'Amans’, which was developed near the ‘Forêt de Parlatges’, it gives pedestrian, riding or cycling opportunities. We recommend serious footwear with ankle support for this walk.
